This takes place during the episode "Timeless" sometime between when Methos gives Alexa the tickets and the last scene where they're leaving. Comments are always welcome, flames will be used to fuel the creative fires. If you want to archive this, e-mail me.
There were only a handful of customers inside when Alexa Bond came in to the bar. She greeted Joe sadly.
"I didn't think you were on tonight, Alexa." Joe looked surprised to see her.
"I'm not. Joe, I'm quitting." She looked nervous.
"Why sweetheart? Something wrong?" Joe watched her with concern in his eyes.
She shook her head. "No, no. It's Adam."
"What'd he do? I'll kill him if he hurt you." Joe shook his fist.
"No, Joe. He didn't hurt me. He wants to take me away."
"Away? Where?"
"I don't know. We haven't decided yet. I was wondering if you have anything I could do today. I feel bad leaving with giving you notice. We're leaving in two days." She added.
Joe looked around and finally handed her the towel. "You can start by drying the glassware, if you want."
Alexa took the towel from him and began drying the glasses. "Thanks Joe."
He smiled at her and went to sit at a table with a pretty young woman. Alexa recognized her as one of the people that were always in the bar with Adam. They had always seemed very close. Alexa was just finishing putting away the glasses when Joe stood up and went into the office. The young woman went back to writing in a book in front of her.
Alexa took a deep breath and gathered up some courage before grabbing the teapot and heading over to the table.
Asher du Lac looked up from her journal to see Alexa standing at her table with a teapot. She looked a little scared.
"Hi." She refilled the mug sitting on the table. "I'm Alexa."
"Thanks." Asher smiled and sipped the refreshed tea. "I know. Adam told me about you. I'm Asher."
"Nice to meet you." Alexa looked down at her feet. "This is kinda awkward but, uh-"
"Do you want to talk about something?" Asher put on her best non-threatening appearance. She kicked a chair out for Alexa to sit. "Have a seat."
"I shouldn't. I'm supposed to be working."
Asher smiled brightly again and signaled to Joe, who was behind the bar again, that they were going to chat. He nodded. "Don't worry about it. I've got some pull here."
Alexa laughed softly. "Adam told me the same thing. You're friends with him." Asher nodded. "If you don't mind me asking,"
"How friendly are we?" Asher finished for her. Alexa nodded and looked down embarrassed. "I don't mind. Adam's my best friend. We've known each other forever it seems. At one time we were something more. Not anymore."
That seemed to put Alexa more at ease. "So you grew up together?"
"You could say that."
"He seems so kind."
"He is. He's helped me through a lot of hard times. He's got this strength."
She nodded. "I see that in him." They fell silent and Asher took the opportunity to study this girl who had stolen Methos' heart. Shoulder length strawberry-blond hair was pulled up in a bouncy ponytail. She was thin and Asher could see the beginnings of the effects of the cancer in her body. Her face was smiling but there was an underlying tiredness. Overall, she exuded a calm sadness that Asher felt in her own heart.
"He told me a little about you." Alexa said after a while.
Asher looked surprised. "He did?"
She nodded. "Yeah. He said you were special."
"He said the same thing about you. Told me he wants to spend the rest of your life with you. I think you should let him."
She nodded, understanding but still questioning. "But why does he care? I have less than a year to live. I don't want to think about the pain he's going to bring himself when I die."
Asher reached out and touched Alexa's hand. "He's not worried about himself. He wants you to enjoy all the time you have left."
Alexa sat mulling over what Asher had just said. Finally she laughed a short bark. "You talk like him too. Like you've lived for a long time. Just how old are you?"
"How old do you think I am?" She countered good-naturedly.
"Older than you look. You look 18. What does that make you 20, 23?"
"Closer to Adam's age. I have good genetics."
"Wow, I guess. I'd better get back to work."
"If you ever want to talk, Joe's got my number." She told Alexa. At that moment, Asher felt the buzz of a nearby Immortal. She sat up straight and watched the door as Methos came inside.
"How are my two favorite ladies? My ears were burning. Were you talking about me?" He sat down next Asher and smiled brightly at Alexa.
"Oh yes, I told her all your secrets." Asher remarked sarcastically.
Alexa rolled her eyes. "I've got to get back to work." She went back to the bar.
Methos watched her walk back to the bar. "So what were you really talking about?"
"Life, living. Don't let that one get away, Adam." She gathered her things and stood. "You were right. She is special. Sometimes it's easy to forget how fragile they are." She commented before leaning down to give him a quick peck on the cheek "I'm going to Mac's for dinner tonight, if you need me."
"Thanks, Ash. I'll talk to you later."
"Yeah, see ya later." Asher headed for the door, stopped by Alexa. "Remember what I said, Alexa."
Alexa nodded. "I will. Thanks, Asher."
"No problem. See ya around." Asher waved to Joe and pushed through the door, leaving the bar.
Fragile
Lyrics and Music by Sting
If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clench a lifetime's arguement
Nothing comes from violence
and nothing ever could
To all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from the stars, like tears from the stars
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are, how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from the stars, like tears from the stars
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are, how fragile we are
How fragile we are, how fragile we are
